Moisture testing a cement slab for wood flooringSep 21, 2009
By Spring Hudson We were testing the moisture content of our cement slab prior to installing an engineered hardwood floor. This test works by measuring the amount of moisture by weight absorbed by a container of calcium chloride over a 60-72 hour period. You'll either need scales that measure grams or you can mail the pre-weighed containers to the company to be weighed. Old postal scales that measure to the 1/2 ounce are not detailed enough. You plug the weight change and hours exposed into the formula they give you to get pounds of moisture emitted in a 24 hour period over a 1000 sq ft area. They turn you back to your flooring manufacturer to get the upper limit for a given floor covering, but comment that it's usually 3.0 lbs. They recommend 3 tests in a 1000 sq ft area, with one more for each additional 1000 sq ft. Testing lightweight aggregate floors involves drilling 3 small holes per test. A pH test is included.
