5Good product to patch minor defects in your wood project...Feb 01, 2008
By Victor H. Agresti "remodeling-guy"
Minwax Wood Filler

This product goes on easily, and can be spread with a putty knife or your finger. For deep holes, it usually takes a couple of applications to bring it up to the surface level. Once it dries hard, it can be sanded, drilled, stained, or painted. Minwax says it's non-shrinking. If stained, it won't look exactly like the surrounding wood, as it has a different consistency and no grain. But at least the stained color will be close, as contrasted to non-stainable wood filler products, which stick out like a sore thumb on stained wood.

As with ANY wood filler, you will need to sand the area just patched to be even with the previous surface level. Sanding should be sufficient to remove filler residue on surrounding areas. Otherwise, it wouldn't look good since the wood filler's glue residue reduces stain absorption.

The last time I used this product was to fill a 3/8" diameter knot hole in an oak shelf about to be stained. The second coat was tapered over the surrounding wood. When it hardened, I used course emery cloth (initially) with a sanding block in the manner described. The result after staining was fine, as the "glue" in the surrounding area was removed, leaving only the patched hole. If you're not having success removing the glue from surrounding areas, use a rougher grit sand paper, then smooth the area with higher grit paper. If you're going to paint the project, you only need to sand the patch smooth.

If you haven't removed all of the glue, that will become apparent the instant you apply stain, as that area will be lighter or blotched. The time to fix it so it all blends in properly, is right then. Sand it some more while the stain is still wet, and re-stain.

The glue issue is similar to what happens if wood glue you use spills onto an area to be stained. Another example: if you buy oak/maple/pine from a store that uses bar-code labels, you'll need to thoroughly remove the glue residue from that label, before staining.

Once the tube is opened, the unused filler slowly dries out, so plan to use it within a few months.

1Stainable? Not!Sep 13, 2009
By Larry E. Koewing
I agree with Dean (previous review). After completely following instructions on the packaging and tube, I filled in some areas in sentimentally-valued picture frame. Disaster! Using a variety of products (including Minwax items), this stuff does not accept a stain! It appears that I will have to diassemble the frame and completely clean the filler from the wood. Having a simple project turn into this sort of thing is not my idea of fun! Use this product if you have a yen for self-inflicted pain!

1Easy to use but looks horrible once you paint/ stain over it!Nov 28, 2010
By Sactomommy
I bought this product and was impressed at first with how easy it was to use. Little did I know the downside to it. I used it to fill in some gaps in a cabinet I was refinishing. It went on well and smoothed easily. There is a very small amount of shrinking so you may have to go over it again later. I applied, sanded, reapplied a little more and cleaned it. I was so excited to finally paint my cabinet. Thats when I discovered that this wood filler is not all its cracked up to be. I was able to see the areas I filled in and it looks blotchy! I'm so mad! The paint absorbs differently into the minwax wood filler and you can very easily point it out. I was using a satin finish paint in black and now my cabinet looks horrible! I just may have to redo it all over again. All my hard work, down the drain.
Thanks Minwax.

1JUNK!! Ruined my BartopJun 29, 2011
By woody
Just finished putting a second coat of stain on my bar top hoping that it would hide the Stainable wood filler that my first coat was not able to, to no avail. this product is junk and i will not buy any more minwax products ever again. I put a lot of hard work into this bar top only to have it ruined by some cheap NON-stainable wood filler. JUNK

1Minwax wood filler is NOT stainable!Feb 25, 2012
By Cindy and James
We purchased the minwax filler over elmers thinking that minwas filler to minwax stain would be best for our new wainscoat. We were wrong! The wood filler does not take stain and has basically ruined our stain grade crown, trim and wainscoat. The stain around every filled nail hole has a blochy/orange-ish spot even after proper drying of the filler and sanding. If I could give this product a rating less an a 1 I would! After reading all the reviews and adding mine, makes me wonder if the positive reviews are real.
