Didn't work well for wall trimmingJan 28, 2008
By Tom T I owned one of these for a day, then returned it for a refund.
I've owned some rental property for years, and this time rather than pay for carpet installation, I finally decided to try doing it myself. I'm able to rent or borrow all the necessary tools, except a wall trimmer. So, I went to the nearby chain building supply store (orange color) and this was the only trimmer they sold, so I got it.
The trimmer was in the factory sealed plastic packaging, so this definitely wasn't a returned item. The first problem I noticed after cutting open the packaging was that the protective nylon runner that's supposed to be attached to the skid that's pushed against the wall or baseboard was included but not attached. It didn't snap on the bottom of the skid, there was no adhesive, and there were no instructions suggesting what adhesive to use to attach it. I decided to worry about that after I played with the trimmer a bit.
Actually, the only instruction provided (in 5 languages) with this Roberts 10-616 GT Carpet Trimmer is how to change the blades. I guess a "pro" would know how to best set this trimmer up for a specific job. So, as a non-pro, without instructions, I had to do a lot of trial & error adjusting the shims (for vertical position) & blade (for horizontal position,) then cutting on a piece of scrap carpeting to figure out what shim & blade adjustments created what results. This is when I discovered a second problem.
After a while, a lot of little carpet tufts got caught in the throat area by the blade, making it harder & harder to push & trim. So, I had to stop, clean it out, and resume.
Frustrated, I decided to go online to the Roberts site to see if they had some downloadable instructions or hints & tips. No instructions there either.
But, at their website I found out that Roberts makes the 10-905 wall trimmer -- which looks a lot more like the carpet wall trimmer I've seen the pro installers use. That's when I decided to take this Roberts 10-616 GT Carpet Trimmer back for a refund.
While online I did some searching and came across the Crain 10-246 wall trimmer, which looks very much like the Roberts 10-905, but a few bucks less. I'm not very happy with Roberts right now plus the big orange building supply place doesn't stock the Roberts 10-905 in-store nor does Amazon list it. So I'll order the Crain wall trimmer from somewhere else and add the results to this review in a few weeks.

Bought it from homedepot to cut the carpet against my molding. It's a horrible design with 0 instructions. I returned it shortly after. You'll have better luck just hacking your carpet with a razor blade.
